Experience the Hive with Honeybee Bliss!
Proudly recommended by BBC Travel as one of the experiences to discover in Western North Carolina. Led by 20+ year Beekeeper/Honey Sommeliers, this immersive experience combines beekeeping, education, and a guided tasting that will change the way you think about honey forever.
Some experiences stay with you for a lifetime.
Standing beside a thriving honeybee colony…meeting a real queen bee… tasting warm honey fresh from the hive…watching thousands of bees work together with incredible purpose and precision. It’s something most people never have the opportunity to experience, and it’s a memory you’ll never forget.
We’d love to share that world with you.
Our Hive Experience is much more than a tour. It’s an intimate, hands-on journey into one of nature’s greatest masterpieces. We intentionally keep our groups small so you can ask questions, take your time, and truly immerse yourself in the fascinating lives of honeybees. You don't have to worry aboutcapturing the perfect photo while you're busy enjoying the experience. We'll take plenty, so you can soak it all.
After getting suited up in a beekeeper suit, we’ll walk into one of our active apiaries, where you’ll come face-to-face with thousands of gentle honeybees going about their daily work. You’ll meet a real queen bee, learn how every member of the colony has a purpose, and discover why honeybees are among the most remarkable creatures on Earth.
One of the moments that surprises our guests the most happens the instant we gently open the hive. A warm, sweet aroma rises from within—a scent of honey, beeswax, propolis, nectar, and the hive itself. It’s difficult to describe because it’s unlike anything else, yet somehow it feels ancient and deeply familiar, as though it awakens a memory you didn’t know you had. It’s one of those unforgettable moments that stays with you long after the day is over.
If nature cooperates, you may witness the famous waggle dance, the bees’ incredible way of communicating the location of flowers to their sisters. You’ll learn about honeybee democracy, where they “vote” to choose a new home for the colony, and you may even see bees festooning—forming living chains as they work together to build perfectly engineered honeycomb.
We’ll share stories from more than two decades of beekeeping, explain what you’re seeing inside the hive, and answer every question you’ve ever had about honeybees.
Then comes everyone’s favorite part.
You’ll taste fresh honey straight from the hive gathered around the table for a guided honey tasting led by Honey Sommeliers. Together, we’ll explore the remarkable differences in aroma, texture, color, and flavor that come from different nectar sources, much like a wine tasting. Sample our seasonal honeys along with our handcrafted infused varieties while learning how different nectar sources create completely different colors, aromas, and tasting notes. -You’ll never taste honey the same way again.
One of the things we love sharing with our guests is that honey is a season in a jar.
Every harvest tells the story of what was blooming during a brief moment in time. Spring honey has its own personality. Summer
wildflowers create an entirely different flavor. Our treasured Sourwood honey comes from one of the Southern Appalachians’ most celebrated blooms—a short season that only comes once each year. Every jar captures a moment that can never be repeated.
By the end of your visit, you’ll understand why we don’t simply sell honey—we share the story of the bees, the flowers, the seasons, and the incredible journey that brings every drop to your table.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a foodie, a gardener, or simply someone looking for an unforgettable adventure, this is an experience unlike any other. Many of our guests tell us it was the highlight of their trip and something they’ll be talking about for years to come.
Our Hive Experiences are offered May through September, weather permitting. The safety and well-being of both our guests and our bees always come first, so experiences may be rescheduled if conditions are not suitable. Because we keep each group small to provide a personal, relaxed experience, advance reservations are required.
If you’ve been searching for a true bucket-list experience in the North Carolina mountains, we’d be honored to welcome you to Honeybee Bliss.
Come meet the queen. Step inside the hive. Taste honey where it’s made. Discover the extraordinary world of the honeybee—and leave with a deeper appreciation for one of nature’s greatest wonders.
